HOW HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF
It is widely agreed that the original way the Europeans treated the Native Americans was inhuman, and do you think that people should suffer in the same manner as the Native Americans did? Well whatever your answer is, people are still being taken advantage of, in the same manner. A majority is taking advantage of a minorities primitive nature. For example, if people,in the 1500s-1600s, used spears instead of fire-arms that would be considered primitive, so the Spanish would take advantage of the fact that the Natives had inferior and primitive technology. However, the same thing is happening now with the Waorani. The Chevron Oil Company is planning on drilling for oil in the Ecuadorian rain-forest because there will be monetary gain involved for them. Are you seeing a pattern. A more "advanced" society is coming in and claiming the land of the people who already inhabited it. However the motives have changed, for example, the original intent of the conquistadors was to spread their religion, obtain riches and glory. However, Chevron is in it for the money because that's what makes the world go round, right? Apparently, human rights went out the window along with ethics. Not only is this an inevitable tragedy but it is also an abuse of superiority. Commonly, you see people, in this type of situation, trying to help build each other up, however there will always be exceptions. For example, when a teacher finds out that a student is struggling he or she doesn't sit back and make fun of them; they try to help the student out. However if you are in search of personal gain, this is not the route you will take. It is apparent that both Chevron and the early Europeans were in search of personal gain. However terrible Chevron's decision seems we will not be able to change the fact that history is repeating itself. If it plays out like it did with the Native Americans, then there will be a terrible outcome for the future of the Waorani. Let's hope that Chevron will learn from the Europeans mistakes before it's too late.
