HOW THIS WILL HIT YOU HARDER THAN YOU THINK
As you are aware, the Amazon rain-forest provides around 20% of oxygen in the world, so if you clear out acres for one oil drilling project, a small percentage of the original twenty will be taken. This may not seem like a big deal, but as soon as this becomes a common and recurring issue, then the oxygen produced will exponentially decrease. This is bad for humans as well as the atmosphere. The fact that they cleared out the forest for oil drilling is even worse. Theoretically, if oil production goes up, then more carbon dioxide will be released into the atmosphere, so the project Chevron is working on, is removing a percentage of oxygen from the atmosphere, and it will replace it with carbon dioxide. This will create a bad environment for life to prosper. In the long run, with higher oil production, we are just hurting ourselves and the environment more than we can imagine. Do you still think this is a minor operation, and do you still think this won't affect you?
Not only does the Amazon rain-forest provide oxygen, but it is home to thousands of organisms. Rain-forests have the highest amount of biodiversity. Imagine Chevron hacking down one single tree. It doesn't seem like a big deal, right? Wrong, Even if you hack down a single tree you will affect several different organisms. Did you know that several organisms go extinct every day? However, if Chevron does not step in and try to clear out the land for oil a smaller amount of organisms will be negatively affected.
If I were you, I'd think about this: long and hard. Are you willing to destroy a rich, bio-diverse area... for oil? Are you willing to accept the fact that what Chevron is doing is wrong? Let's make some connections to natives living in Georgia. Chevron is the Spanish explorers, while the Waorani Tribes are the natives. We all know what happened... the natives were wiped out by the Spanish. Are we going to let history repeat itself? Hopefully, we've learned our lesson. Will Chevron ever learn?
